Zarina and David - A Mix of Two Traditions and a Golf Themed Wedding Cake

The wedding of Zarina and David, a Malay bride to a Frenchman, therefore, we are looking at the pulut kuning, the croquembouche and a golf-themed wedding cake.
Simply interesting!

The traditional pulut kuning / nasi kunyit / nasi kuning accompanied with a side dish of beef rendang, laid out among the other hantaran items,
the customary exchange of gifts between the bride and groom.
Here's a link to Sleepless in KL's blog which explains clearly the requirements of hantaran,
a good guide for brides-to-be.

This is a set of autumn leaf cutters, among one of my early cake tool possessions...and I never knew they were autumn leaves!
Only found that out when I have to do this wedding...so I googled (my best friend is Google, or maybe I should name my next pet Google, or get a beagle and name it Google).

The four autumn shades for four different leaf shapes chosen.

Before dusting.

Ta daa! After dusting.
A lot of difference dusting does.

Frangipani seems to be the best flower to match the leaves.
Here's the tutorial for it.

Now, I shall introduce the wedding page of Zarina and David on Facebook.
Yes, the Facebook, sometimes you love it, sometimes you hate it...but this time, I guarantee you will absolutely love it!

Please take a look at the page...all I can blog about is show and tell pictures of wedding cakes and venues without any people in them. The people is what makes all the difference, no matter what the cake and venue looks like.

This is the golf-themed cake.
I couldn't get a good picture of it because of the lighting from the window.
The bride looks very much like Zarina. The figurines tell the whole story, so I just air-brushed the cake and kept everything simple...a minimalist cake,
and not to mention flat and broad, as opposed to a normally tall wedding cake.
A golf theme is so difficult...maybe it is the question of the placement of the figurines.
To place them at the most appropriate position to tell a story.

Next is the croquembouche!
My first attempt.

I baked the profiteroles on the day of the wedding...just too risky!
Then piped pastry cream into them from the bottom,
but not too much so that they remain light.
Ganache the whole styrofoam at the venue...

Stick the profiteroles on the cone and brush on more ganache around each one so that they would stick to the neighbouring ones.

Brush on caramel sauce to make them shine...and by now they smelled heavenly!
So I had to share the extras with other wedding vendors and crew around at that time...the wedding was fun even before guest arrival...hehe!

Pumpkins!

And more pumpkins!

Scattered leaves on the pathway.

This dinner was at Royal Perak Golf Club (RPGC),
one of my favourite wedding venues now!

Tiered Buttercream Wedding Cake at Royal Perak Golf Club (RPGC), Ipoh

The wedding of Deena and Jaya, 23rd June, 2012 at the Jubilee Hall, Royal Perak Golf Course.

This is a buttercream wedding cake with four real cake on the upper tiers
and a dummy bottom tier covered with fondant.

Here's a flower that looks like the anemone.

Thinning and cupping the petals.

Left to dry in a flower former.

The stamens using gold thread.

Flowers are to be pink and gold, purple and silver.

A cone shaped paste is attached to the back after the stamens are inserted.
Sort of like a short cut, cheating method. ;)

The letters J and D are printed out from the computer, cut out and use as a template to cut out on gum paste and turn them into monograms.
Gold and silver dragees added to give some bling.

Top two tiers of cake is assembled at the venue.
Each tier has a different texture...and I just love cakes without borders.
It's my first buttercream wedding cake...happy with the outcome. :)

The flowers are then attached to the cake with the monogram on top.

The photography corner where guests can take photos with the bride and groom after dinner.

An archway decorated with lanterns and pom-poms.
Walkway strewn with red rose petals.

This is the entrance to the ballroom with a huge and long banner for guests to write their wishes on.

Brangelina aka Mr and Mrs Smith...as Wedding Toppers

The wedding of Mohana and Pratip in Syuen Hotel, Ipoh.

A picture of the topper is provided by Mohana.
It doesn't say Brangelina...or Mr. and Mrs. Smith...I just made it up
...cause it does reminds me of them in that movie.
The bride's costume is a replica of what Mohana wore that night.

Here's how I did the bride...

...and the groom.

Give them heads, faces and hair from royal icing.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the outcome, just a couple of points to remember for future wedding figurines.

Funky designed cupcakes to match.
The cake theme was "nothing serious, and in warm colours".

Cool backdrop!

This is what you see as you enter the ballroom.

Another backdrop at the far end of entrance.

Pretty and sweet!

Everything in its place and all ready for service.

Cows as Wedding Cake Toppers...and some Butterflies too.

Another cute animal themed wedding cake topper.

It's cows this time!
Plus some butterflies which are among the bride's favourite things.

Cow figurines in the making.
They have heart-shaped hooves.

View from the top.
Cow have elongated heads so when you see from the top, you can actually see the eyes and such.
But when viewed from the front, you get a smiley face...the pink portion where the nostrils and mouth looks like. :)

Cow shaped spots using all sorts of cutters available on-hand.

Making the butterflies.
Using my collection of butterfly cutters. Metal ones are cookie cutters,
black ones are from the Patchwork Cutters range.
Tutorial for this can be found here.

Attaching body to the butterflies and wiring them.
This is so that you can position them not just on the cake,
but also between the cake boards used to construct the tower.

The front view.
Can you see the smiley face?

The 'pelamin', the wedding dais,
where the bride and groom will be seated for the 'bersanding',
a traditional Malay wedding enthronement ceremony.

Beautiful main table set-up with a small fountain at the front.
This is where the wedding couple and close family will have their
formal meal with their guests. (source)

Guests table with the dome tray in the middle, which consist of compartments under the lid, for different dishes taken with rice.

A reception table with the Guest Book.

Items in the gift pack for guests.
Marshmallows in a jar,
cookies with initials (done by me!)
a 'bunga telur', hard-boiled egg with a stalk of silk flower (another traditional item to signify fertility),
and a prayer book with bride and groom's name.
